Frequently Asked Questions

With its exceptional quantum efficiency and high full-well-capacity, CHARLIE is suited for a variety of imaging and spectroscopic applications across the UV and into the Hard X-ray spectrum. Its low-footprint design with flexible vacuum-flanging options makes it suitable for small setups and lab instrumentation, large X-ray beamline experiments or for integration into industrial processes.
Typical applications cover spectroscopy and imaging in both the UV/EUV and X-ray spectrum. Its low-noise and high quantum efficiency can reach single-photon sensitivity and allows for reliable observation of low-signal phenomena, while the high dynamic range allows for high brilliance measurements. Furthermore, the high frame rates of the camera makes the product highly suitable to study dynamics of states/reactions.

No! CHARLIE works with direct detection and offers sharper resolution with a peak quantum efficiency up to 99%.

This strongly depends on your use case. CHARLIE has significantly higher frame-rates than the CCD ALEX. However, under certain conditions ALEX can outperform CHARLIE in key areas – the high dynamic range being one example. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to determine which solutions works best for you!

Greateyes takes great pride in offering cameras tailored to our customers needs. We offer flexibility in the camera footprint and flange coupling as well as sensor positioning and cooling with both forced-air and liquid-circulation options. Please reach out with any questions!

CHARLIE is easy to integrate into existing systems, not only because of its small size. The camera connect via 10 Gigabit Ethernet or USB ports, with standard TTL triggering over SMB cable. Control can be achieved using either the intuitive Vision software package, or drivers and SDKs for popular systems and programing languages.
CHARLIE can read out its full 2048 by 2048 pixels with a frame rate of up to 48 fps, depending on the dynamic-range setting. The exceptionally read-noise of 1.6e- ensures that even at this highest setting, low-noise images can be acquired. Additionally, you can select between a rolling shutter or a global reset, giving additional flexibility.
The Typical read noise is 1.6e- at -50°C, with a dark current of 0.2 e-/s. When used at a high frame-rate, the impact of the dark current becomes vanishingly small.

The standard camera housing, without flange is 8.3 cm x 11.8 cm x 12.4 cm (W x H x L). The active imaging area and pixel size varies, with the standard sensor being 22.5 mm x 22.5 mm, with a pixel size of 11 µm square.

The small camera size allows for exceptional flanging options, with the small knife-edge sealed CF DN63 being standard. We offer quick-release, rotatable, or non-standard options as well – just get in touch!

The CHARLIE AD-converter comes with two settings: standard (SDR) and high (HDR). The standard mode allows for acquisition with the full 48 fps, albeit with only 12-bit resolution. The HDR mode has a 16-bit resolution but only reaches 24 fps. Alongside the multiple gain settings, these settings give CHARLIE the flexibility to be implemented even in environments with a volatile brilliance.

While the number of captured electrons depends on the photon energy, A high-gain mode ensures that even a low photon-flux produces high-contrast images. Depending on the photon energy, CHARLIE is even capable of single-photon counting! For situations with a high brilliance, the large full-well-capacity of 91ke- per pixel in HDR mode provides excellent coverage

Greateyes does not directly produce complimentary optics excepting necessary transmission windows, optical filters, and optical coatings. However, we would be eager to assist you with any questions and make concrete recommendations. Do not hesitate to ask!

CHARLIE can be cooled to -50°C thanks to our patented cooling system! This gives the system unparalleled noise specifications.
